Crews from the Erie Streets Department were out in force, deploying all of their tools to pick up those late falling leaves from area streets before the news snow falls.

We tracked them down working on South Shore Drive, a neighborhood with lots of trees. The were using a claw, compacter trucks, a cage contraption on the front of a truck, and a street sweeper.

While the Erie Streets Department does scoop up leaves in the street, they really ask city residents to rake their leaves into biodegradable clear lawn and leaf bags or place them in open containers for collection on their regular garbage night.

Erie News Now was surprised to see even a private lawn service blowing lots of leaves into the street, creating more work for city crews.

Public Works Department officials say that the Streets Department crews are already on their 24-hour winter schedule, so they are ready for any Thanksgiving snows.

And the city issues this reminder. If you rake your leaves into the street, they’ll only get plowed back into your yard by Erie snowplows, when the next measurable snow arrives.
