UGI Energy Services, a subsidiary of UGI Corporation, has started up a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility with storage and vaporisation capabilities in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Facilities like the Carlisle site use cryogenic technology, cooling natural gas to around –162°C so it can be stored as a super-cold liquid in insulated tanks.
When demand spikes – usually in the winter – the LNG is warmed through on-site vaporisers and returned to a gaseous state before being sent into the pipeline system for distribution.
This type of “peak-shaving” system helps ensure supply during cold-weather surges and reduces strain on regional pipeline capacity.
Joe Hartz, President of UGIES, said he was pleased to begin operations ahead of the winter heating season to meet peak demands.
“We’re excited to bring this important resource online and look forward to working with UGI Utilities to help meet natural gas growth in this area.”
The project required coordination with local authorities, which included upgrades to nearby water-supply infrastructure.
