A fire on Thanksgiving forced multiple people from a duplex home in Scranton.

Firefighters were called to the house at 810-812 Myrtle St. just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday and found the fire in the third floor attic area, Fire Chief John Judge said. The call was upgraded to a second alarm out of an abundance of caution because the building is a duplex.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire, with the flames gone in 35 minutes, he said. It was limited to the attic.

Eight people and two dogs were displaced as a result of the fire, Judge said. However, only one man was home at the time of the blaze, he added. The building had no smoke detectors. There were no injuries.

The city’s code enforcement office and fire inspectors condemned the building due to the smoke and water damage it sustained.

The fire inspector ruled the fire to be accidental and electrical in nature, Judge said.
