CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (KTTC) – The city of Clear Lake, Iowa is set to take up the topic of purchasing Automated License Plate Reading (ALPR) Cameras.
The conversation is on the agenda for the community’s city council meeting Tuesday.
The agenda states the city is looking to purchase 11 cameras.
It also states the purchase is included in the 2026 budget. The cost would then be approximately $34,000 annually.
The city states the cameras would only be used to identify license plates for cases like finding missing people and vehicles, not for speed enforcement.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa is expressing privacy concerns on its website, stating these systems create databases with location information on every driver who encounters the system.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at noon in council chambers.
