A man is accused of accidentally shooting himself during a brawl among several people outside a Bethlehem club.
Andre Cantave, 33, of Queens, New York is charged with two counts felony aggravated assault, felony possession of a prohibited firearm, felony possessing an instrument of crime, two counts misdemeanor reckless endangerment and two counts misdemeanor simple assault.
A warrant for Cantave’s arrest has been filed at the office of District Judge Roy A. Manwaring II.
Cantave’s co-defendant, 38-year-old Shatika Schaffer, with no address provided, is charged with simple assault. Schaffer is awaiting arraignment on the charges, according to court records.
City police said the fighting began shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday at the 540 Democratic Club, 540 N. New Street. It’s unclear what led to the fighting. Investigators said it began inside and ended up in the parking lot.
Cantave and Schaffer during the altercation allegedly assaulted several people. At some point during the fighting, Cantave showed a gun and accidentally shot himself, police said.
He then went to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill for treatment of a gunshot wound. Injuries on Tuesday morning did not appear life threatening, police said.
There were no other injuries reported in the incident.
Bethlehem police continue to handle the investigation.
