Philadelphia 76ers vs Atlanta Hawks Preview

After 18 games played this season, we can confidently say that this is no longer Joel Embiid’s team, Tyrese Maxey has fully taken over the role of leader. Embiid missed a huge part of last season, underwent surgery over the summer, and this year he has already missed more than 50% of the games. Based on everything we’ve seen over the past year, it is difficult to believe Embiid will return to the level he once played at. Without him performing at least close to his old standard, this team simply cannot pose a serious threat to the strongest contenders in the league. This is clearly reflected in their current record: after 18 games, the Philadelphia 76ers stand at 10 wins and eight losses, currently occupying a spot that leads only to the play-in tournament. In their most recent game, they defeated the Brooklyn Nets, which gave them a small boost.

As already mentioned, this is Tyrese Maxey’s team now, and that should be obvious to everyone, both inside the organization and throughout the rest of the league. The outstanding guard is playing at an exceptionally high level and currently ranks among the top scorers in the NBA. Maxey is averaging 32.2 points per game and is the third-leading scorer in the entire league. Needless to say, this is the best season of his career. Besides him, Kelly Oubre had been playing very well before suffering an injury. This year’s draft pick, VJ Edgecombe, started the season excellently, but then his form dropped and he later got injured. A positive sign, however, is the return of Jared McCain, who had suffered a serious injury but last season played extremely well before going down and was practically the team’s second-best player. Still, with a below-average defense and an offense that is merely average, it is clear that this team cannot realistically achieve major results.

It is also clear that the Atlanta Hawks are not contenders either, as they lack several key components needed for a deep playoff run. However, it must be said that they are playing slightly above expectations so far, especially considering that they have spent the entire month of November without their nominal best player. Trae Young played only the first few games, and during that stretch, the results were noticeably worse. Without him, the Hawks have looked far more cohesive and disciplined, and they now stand at 12 wins and eight losses. In their most recent game, they hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers and managed to secure a victory, thus making up for the surprising loss to the Washington Wizards a few days earlier.

Interestingly, the Hawks are one of the few teams with a better record on the road than at home. In 12 away games, they have recorded eight wins and four losses, while at home they hold an even 4–4 record. After Young’s injury, Jalen Johnson has completely taken over the team and is playing at an all-star level, in the win against the Cavaliers, he put up 29 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. It is becoming increasingly clear that the team looks more balanced without Young, which raises an important question: should Atlanta consider turning Johnson into their new franchise centerpiece and start building the roster around him? Nickeil Alexander-Walker has also stepped up in his expanded role, but this only highlights a new issue. Zacharie Risacher seems somewhat lost and has not progressed as much as expected in his second NBA season, which is becoming a concern for the coaching staff.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Atlanta Hawks H2H

The Atlanta Hawks won all three head-to-head matchups between these two teams that were played last season.

Injuries and Suspensions

Trendon Watford, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Joel Embiid will not play for the Philadelphia 76ers, while VJ Edgecombe and Andre Drummond are questionable, with their status to be decided shortly before tip-off. On the other side, Trae Young will miss this game as well for the visitors, just like Kristaps Porzingis, N’Faly Dante and Nikola Djurisic.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Atlanta Hawks Best Betting Tip and Prediction

A matchup between two teams that are playing without their biggest names, players who are no longer the best performers on their respective rosters. The Atlanta Hawks have significantly improved their defense since Trae Young went out with an injury, while their offense is currently at roughly the league-average level. When we also consider that the Philadelphia 76ers play at one of the slowest paces in the entire league, it becomes clear why our prediction is that this game will feature fewer points than the margin.
