Jack David Gassert
OBITUARY
Jack David Gassert, age 90, died at the Highlands at Wyomissing on September 22, 2025. Born in Laureldale, Pennsylvania on November 21, 1934, he was the son of Ralph J. Gassert and Mollie (Miller) Gassert. He graduated from Muhlenberg High School in 1952. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University in 1957. He was employed for 37 years by General Public Utilities, beginning as an engineering cadet and retiring as the Vice President for System Operations in 1994.
He and his wife, Jean Hain Gassert, were married for 69 years. He is also survived by two children, the Rev. Beth Lyon of Sinking Spring and David Gassert (Jenny) of Harrisburg, three grandchildren, Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Lyon (Christina) of Vancouver, WA, Rebecca Lyon (Cody Schoonover) of Afton, WY, and Margaret Gassert (Jake Plevelich) of Mechanicsburg, PA,and by one great-grandchild, Isaiah Lyon.
Jack was an active member of Calvary Reformed Church of the United Church of Christ in Reading, serving as an elder, a deacon, and a member of the Finance Committee. He also helped with church gardening and did small repairs around the building. He was an avid tennis player and a competitive Bridge player. He loved to cross country ski and take bicycle trips. He and Jean treated their children and grandchildren to annual trips to the Outer Banks. He and Jean traveled the world, exploring South America, Australia and New Zealand. They visited Micronesia and Thailand and enjoyed trips to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. They bicycled across France and the Netherlands. He lived a full life.
A memorial service will be held at the Highlands at Wyomissing on October 15, at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Calvary Reformed Church of the United Church of Christ 640 Centre Ave Reading, PA 19601.
