The speed limit on Interstate 81 in south-central Pennsylvania has been temporarily reduced due to today’s winter storm.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 2, that the speed limit was lowered to 45 mph on a number of roads, including I-81 from the Maryland line to Schuylkill County. The reduction covers Franklin, Cumberland, Dauphin and Lebanon counties.

Commercial vehicles must travel in the right lane on I-81.

Vehicle restrictions and speed reductions are in place on other major roads throughout the state due to the winter storm.

“Although PennDOT crews have been treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, and they will not completely free of ice and snow,” a news release from PennDOT said. “PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.”

PennDOT is encouraging people to avoid travel if they can and advises drivers to use caution if they must be on the road.

“Motorists should always allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks,” the news release continued. “Also, for their own safety and the safety of plow operators, motorists should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials.”

Waynesboro schools closed

The Waynesboro Area School District also closed for a snow day on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The makeup day Feb. 16, 2026.

All other schools in Franklin County were already closed for either Thanksgiving vacation or in-service days.
