Your chances of skating on the Stone House Pond in Wyomissing this winter appear to be on thin ice.
The borough parks and recreation department said in a Facebook post that the public works department has been trying for the past couple of months to figure out why the pond no longer can hold water.
Because of the age of the blacktop and the amount of deterioration beneath the surface, officials said, several cracks and crevices have caused ongoing leaks that cannot be repaired at this time.
They said work to fix the issue has been suspended.
Officials said the ongoing issues mean ice skating cannot be guaranteed this winter. The underground water source will continue to keep the pond full, but the conditions needed for safe skating are unlikely, they said.
Workers will finish draining and cleaning the pond before refilling it for the borough’s annual Lighting of the Greens and Holiday Marketplace on Dec. 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. on the Stone House lawn.
The free, family-friendly event includes performances from the Wyomissing Band, festive music from a DJ and seasonal treats. The marketplace will feature local artisans and vendors with handmade gifts, crafts and décor.
Inside the Stone House, families can visit Santa Claus. The lighting of the greens takes place at 5 p.m.
