Mercyhurst University announced today that Dr. Kathleen Getz, president since 2021, will retire on June 30, 2026, concluding a distinguished 35-year career in higher education and five years of transformative leadership at Mercyhurst.
Dr. Getz joined the University during a period of significant disruption in higher education and led Mercyhurst through strategic initiatives that strengthened its academic and financial foundation. Her accomplishments include, forming academic alliances for dual-degree program, establishing a center for neurodiverse students, launching the University’s Centennial Strategic Plan, transitioning to NCAA Division I athletics, and advocating for Mercyhurst’s inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places
Her leadership earned numerous honors, including recognition in the Higher Education Power 100, Pennsylvania’s Top Women Leaders, and Women Making History, as well as the Distinguished Communicator Award from AICUP.
“Serving Mercyhurst has been a highlight of my career,” said Dr. Getz. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together and confident the University is poised for an even stronger second century.”
The Board of Trustees has named Dr. David Livingston as Interim President, effective July 1, 2026, for a two-year term. Dr. Livingston brings nearly 30 years of higher education experience, including prior service at Mercyhurst as faculty member and Vice President for Advancement. He later served as president of Lourdes University and Lewis University, where he expanded academic offerings, grew enrollment, and doubled the endowment.
“I am deeply honored to return to Mercyhurst,” said Dr. Livingston. “I look forward to building on Dr. Getz’s achievements and ensuring a seamless transition.”
Board Chair Joe NeCastro emphasized that the appointment ensures continuity and positions Mercyhurst for long-term success.
Dr. Getz will continue to lead the University through the 2025–2026 academic year, guiding major initiatives and preparing for the transition.
