While the season’s first major snowfall caused disruptions for some, a few folks took advantage of the winter wonderland.
LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — The first major snow event of the season caused some trouble in communities across Lackawanna County.
In Throop, two tractor-trailers came to a halt in the middle of Dunmore Street.Â
“This is a state road, so they need to come out. We did put a call into them. I’m sure they’re busy, so we just got to wait for them, but I did reach out to my DPW people, and they’re gonna come up and try to salt and make some, uh, plows so they get that tractor-trailer. Well, we’ve got two tractor-trailers stuck,” said Chief Andrew Kerecman, Throop Police Department.
After closing the road, Chief Kerecman says this situation is one of a handful his department has had to deal with since the snow started falling, “Well, I had a guy driving a Mustang with summer tires. That’s the wrong vehicle to drive. Four-wheel drive, I mean, there’s front-wheel drive vehicles on the road. You just gotta be careful, the roads are slick.”
With the arrival of a PennDOT and Throop borough plow truck, we continued to neighboring Olyphant.
While the snow is a job for some, others decided to enjoy their snow day. With a kick of the shovel, Ava Zackoski packed down piles of snow to keep the sidewalks around her house cleaned, “Well, my dad helped me, but I’ve been just shoveling more because it’s keep coming,” she said.
A block away, Xzavier Franklin used his day off from school to help his friends shovel. “My two friends live right there, and this is our, um, friend’s house, and she’s a little bit older, so I wanted to help her out a little bit and just shovel her sidewalk,” he said.
Once the snow stops falling and the work is done, both Xzavier and Ava plan on making the most of this season’s first major snowfall.
“I don’t know, I’ll probably just hang out with some friends, have some fun in the snow,” said Xzavier.
“Make a snowman and a snow angel,” said Ava.
