Horton Street between Church Street and Warren Street will be closed to through traffic beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday through next week, as work to repair two sinkholes that opened up this past summer nears completion.

Additionally, Horton Street, between Church Street and Roosevelt Street, will be closed to through traffic on Monday, Dec. 8.

The road will be closed as contractors replace a manhole, in conjunction with the finalization of the Horton Street project.

City officials said residents will still have access to their homes during the work, and Church Street will be open to allow access to Geisinger South Hospital.

Wilkes-Barre Mayor George C. Brown announced the planned road work a little over a week ago, when Horton Street was temporarily reopened for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Horton Street has been closed since June 25, when a large sinkhole opened in the middle of the street, followed by a second subsidence opened up on July 14, about 75 yards from the initial one.
