Scranton Prep and Abington Heights each had two doubles teams advance to the semifinals in their respective classifications at the District 2 Doubles Tournament on Thursday at Kirby Park and Wilkes University.
In Class 2A, Scranton Prep’s top-seeded team of Lily Lengyel and Emma Cuck will face fourth-seeded Catlin Finn and Mahi Dahl of Dallas in one semifinal. Scranton Prep’s Adithi Velaga and Hannah LaCoe, the No. 6 seed, will play Montrose’s team of Anna Evans and Erin Tillotson, the second seed, in the other semifinal.
Abington Heights’ top-seeded team of Amishi Amit and Sammy Rosenstein will face the No. 5 seed team of Victoria Latek and Addy Ezzo of Wallenpaupack. Abington Heights’ Kate Arp and Elsie Phillips, the No. 3 seed, will play North Pocono’s pairing of Anna Clementoni and Cameron Forgione, the No. 6 seed, in the Class 3A semifinals.
The semifinals start Friday at 1 p.m., with the finals to follow at Kirby Park.
Lengyel and Cuck stormed into the semifinals with three wins. The Classics’ top two singles players during the season and semifinalists in the singles tournament lost only two games, and both came in a quarterfinal win over Wyoming Seminary’s team of Kate Minella and Jophie Li, the No. 8 seed.
Finn and Dohl also won three times, with their closest competition coming in the quarterfinals. The Dallas duo defeated MMI Prep’s Ava Gennetti and Mehan Manzour, 7-6 (2), 6-1, to reach the semifinals as the only representative of the Wyoming Valley Conference in both classifications.
Scranton Prep’s team of Velaga and LaCoe, who played at No. 3 singles all season, outlasted Wyoming Seminary’s team of Addison Priebe and Cece Pons, 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the quarterfinals.
Evans and Tillotson, who played singles for the Lady Meteors, teamed up to win three matches. The pairing defeated Wyoming Area’s Emma Kratz and Molly Kratz, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
In Class 3A, Amit, who played in the championship match in the singles tournament, and Rosenstein, who played at No. 3 singles this season, won a pair of matches and lost only two games. The duo knocked off No. 8 Emma Strickler and Josephine Lordi, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.
Latek and Ezzo reached the semifinals with a hard-fought win over West Scranton’s team of Nora Frounfelker and Nina Emiliani, the No. 4 seed, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (6) in the most competitive match in the Class 3A bracket.
Arp and Phillips knocked out the other West Scranton team of Katie Fahey and Julia Farkaly, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
North Pocono’s team of Clementoni and Forgione upset Valley View’s pairing of Ella Swingle and Josie Checho, the No. 2 seed, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
