(WHTM) — Many people may be feeling festive this holiday season and want to decorate their cars with Christmas lights, but is it legal to do that in Pennsylvania?

York County Regional Police says a countrywide trend has emerged of people decorating their vehicles with Christmas lights and driving on the roadway with the lights illuminated.

According to state law, a lamp not exempted or allowed in Tables 3, 4, and 5 of this chapter is prohibited unless it is available as original equipment. The law says putting illuminated signs on cars is illegal in Pennsylvania except on taxicabs, ambulances, and trucks due to their abilities to distract other drivers.

The law says that flashing or revolving lights are not ornamental lamps, and provisions relating to flashing or revolving lights on authorized vehicles and special operating privileges can be seen in Chapters 15 and 173.
