Players who were champions, record-setters and leaders on and off the field are among the seven finalists for the 34th Fiore Cesare Award and Scholarship.
This year’s ceremony is Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Peoples Security Bank and Trust Corporate Center. The award recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and service to the community, and is sponsored by Peoples Security Bank and Trust and presented by the Roy Davis Scranton Chapter of Officials.
The award and $2,500 scholarship are given in honor of Cesare, the late first commissioner of officials for the Scranton chapter.
Scranton Prep graduate and Franklin & Marshall running back Louis Paris was last season’s winner.
The finalists are Lackawanna Trail running back/defensive back Isaac Ryon, Riverside two-way lineman Tavian Branch, Delaware Valley running back/defensive back Mike Iuzzolino, Abington Heights quarterback Nick Bradley, Lakeland quarterback/defensive end David Naniewicz, Scranton Prep quarterback/defensive back Will McPartland and North Pocono tight end/linebacker Evan Wolff.
Ryon had a record-shattering senior year. He led Lackawanna Trail to the District 2 Class 1A and Lackawanna Football Conference Division III championships and an 11-2 record.
He set LIAA single-season records with 2,876 yards rushing, 49 rushing touchdowns, 54 total touchdowns and 354 total points. In addition, Ryon became Lackawanna Trail’s all-time leading rusher and scorer with 4,969 yards, 82 rushing touchdowns and 89 total touchdowns.
Branch, who signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his athletic career at Auburn University on Wednesday, was a coveted four-star recruit. This season, the 6-foot-4, 300-pound two-way lineman had 40 tackles, 29 solo stops and 12 tackles for loss. The powerful interior lineman had six sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, four batted passes, 20 quarterback hurries, a blocked punt and two blocked kicks.
In his career, Branch helped lead Riverside to the District 2 Class 2A championship as a junior and finished with 117 tackles, 49 tackles for loss, 18.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, two blocked punts and four blocked kicks.
Iuzzolino helped Delaware Valley win the District 2 Class 5A championship. He closed out his season with 1,540 yards, 19 rushing touchdowns and 23 total touchdowns. In his career, Iuzzolino ran for 3,431 yards and 47 touchdowns and was an All-Region defensive back as a junior.
Bradley, a three-year starter, overcame a midseason injury to throw for 1,242 yards and 13 touchdowns. He finished as Abington Heights’ all-time leader in career passing yards with 5,733 yards and 63 touchdowns.
Naniewicz had a dominant season on both sides of the ball and led Lakeland to the District 2 Class 2A and LFC Division II championships. He threw for 1,743 yards and 17 touchdowns and added 938 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. As a defensive end, he had 36 tackles with 18 for loss, a sack and an interception.
McPartland got a late start to the season as he recovered from a torn ACL suffered in last season’s PIAA playoffs. He threw for 1,603 yards and 12 touchdowns, ran for 984 yards and 28 touchdowns and led Scranton Prep to the District 2 Class 3A championship.
Wolff was a four-year starter for North Pocono. He had 91 total tackles with 15 for loss and five sacks, while also catching 11 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns this season. He was one of the driving forces behind the Trojans’ record-setting 13-1 season, where they won the LFC Division I and District 2 Class 4A championships.
