Noah Perry put Marywood University ahead with a basket with 41 seconds left and Michel Loftin hit two free throws with 12 seconds to play to secure the Pacers’ 101-98 double-overtime victory over King’s College in a nonconference men’s basketball game at Scandlon Gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre.
It was the fourth straight meeting between the teams that went to overtime.
Perry finished with a career-high 20 points off the bench for Marywood (5-1 overall). Loftin finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Collin Himmelberg added 15 points, Andrew Quinn had 14 points, Joe Macciocco contributed 12 points and Ty Cheney chipped in 10 points. Quinn and Shilo Bivins each had five assists.
A Perry 3-pointer with 45 seconds left in the second half gave Marywood an 83-81 lead. But Ben Rodner-Tims scored with 32 seconds left for King’s to tie the game and force overtime.
Himmelburg hit a layup with 19 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the game, 91-91, and force a second extra session.
Scranton 79, Juniata 61: At Huntingdon, Sammy Tornabene scored a career-high 32 points to lead the University of Scranton to a Landmark Conference win.
Tornabene shot 11 for 13 from the field, including 1 for 3 from 3-point range, and 9 of 12 from the foul line. He had 16 points in the first half as Scranton built a 45-28 halftime lead. He also pulled down seven rebounds.
Brendan Carr followed with 13 points for the Royals (3-1 league, 6-1 overall). Abington Heights grad Will Marion had nine points and six assists, while Nick Ruisi had nine points and 13 rebounds.
Penn State-Harrisburg 83, Keystone 60: At La Plume, Keystone College fell behind by 26 points at halftime and dropped their home opener in a United East Conference game.
Jden Golding led the Giants (0-2, 1-7) with 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Josh Brown added 16 points and four rebounds, while Demetrius Thomas and Ahmodrion Jones scored 10 points apiece.
Lackawanna 82, Middlesex CC 73: At Scranton, Lackawanna College withstood a late rally by Middlesex County College to notch a NJCAA Region 19 Division II victory at the Lackawanna College Student Union.
The Falcons had a 75-61 lead with 2:05 left, but the Colts cut the deficit to 77-73 with 35 seconds remaining. But Lackawanna hit five free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.
Jaksa Pejovic led the Falcons with 18 points. Xavier Spears followed with 16 points. Elijah Smith had 13 points and nine rebounds and Noah Elias chipped in 10 points.
Women’s basketball
At Huntingdon, Kaci Kranson was perfect from the field and led five players in double figures as No. 2-ranked University of Scranton romped past winless Juniata College, 92-40, in Landmark Conference action.
Kranson shot 9 for 9, including 2 of 2 from 3-point range, and 3 for 4 from the foul line to finish with 23 points in just 16 minutes. She also grabbed five rebounds.
Meghan Lamanna hit four 3-pointers and added 16 points for the Lady Royals (4-0, 9-0), who led at halftime, 58-18. Katie Gorski and Kelsey Miedreich each had 12 points and Elizabeth Bennett chipped in 11 points.
Defensively, the Lady Royals forced 34 turnovers, off which they scored 43 points. They also outrebounded Juniata, 46-30.
Middlesex CC 74, Lackawanna 59: At Scranton, Lackawanna College went scoreless for a 5½-minute stretch of the fourth quarter, enabling Middlesex College to pull away to a NJCAA Region 19 Division II win at the Lackawanna College Student Union.
Alania Ortiz led the Lady Falcons (2-3, 4-6) with 23 points and eight rebounds. Ali Johns added 17 points, seven rebounds and eight steals. Sophia Summa contributed nine points and a career-high 11 assists.
Penn State-Harrisburg 57, Keystone 39: At La Plume, Penn State-Harrisburg used a strong second half to pull away from Keystone College in a United East Conference game.
Mid Valley graduate Krista Cortazar led the Lady Giants (1-1, 1-9) with 10 points, Phaneirra Barnett added seven points and seven rebounds. Hailee Hackett and Angelise Sanchez both scored five points.
Keystone trailed at halftime, 22-19, but was outscored in the second half, 35-20.
Wrestling
At Elizabethtown, the University of Scranton had five place-winners and finished fifth out of 10 teams at the Blue Jay Invitational with 108 points.
Donell Young finished second at 174 pounds for the Royals. Jack McCaffrey was third at 184 pounds, Joseph Cappello (125) and Kevin McCarvill (165) each placed fifth in their respective weight classes and Charles Arobone was sixth at 133 pounds.
• At Sanborn, New York, Lackawanna College’s Brodie Daugherty won the title at 285 pounds at the SUNY Niagara Thunderwolves Open.
Daugherty used three straight pins to reach the final, where he decisioned SUNY Niagara’s Mike Welsh, 10-5.
Richard Leslie finished second at 165 pounds for the Falcons and Matt Gashi-Brito placed third at 149 pounds.
Track and field
At Bethlehem, the University of Scranton competed at Lehigh University’s Fast Times Before Finals.
For the men’s team, William Dickson won the 200 meters in 22.53 seconds and Luciano Fiorenza was eighth in 23.29 seconds. Brian Hard placed second in the 400 meters in 53.29 seconds, while Vincent Nola was fourth in 53.64 seconds and Ronan Feenan seventh in 55.71 seconds. Luke Karcutskie was sixth in the 500 meters in 1:11.49 and Brendan Perez eighth in 1:12.90. Daniel Lanahan was fifth in the 1,000 meters in 2:46.94. In the 60-meter hurdles, Joe Castellano was sixth in 9.04 seconds, Peter March seventh in 9.40 seconds and Cade Santos eighth in 9.51 seconds. William Kennedy was 11th in the long jump at 5.76 meters and Kyle Jarrett 12th at 5.74 meters. Aedan Potenza was 13th in the weight throw at 12.11 meters.
Molly White led the Scranton women by placing third in the indoor pentathlon, while Rachael Jones was sixth. Sam Sharrow won the 200 meters in 25.83 seconds and the long jump at 5.52 meters (18 feet, 1.5 inches). Jocelyn Smith was second in the 200 in 25.89 seconds and Kaia Grantham sixth in 26.90 seconds. In the 60 meters, Smith was third in 7.87 seconds and Grantham fifth in 8.03 seconds. Tasia Miniotis was second in the 400 meters in 1:00.97. Claudia Huber was fourth in 1:05.37 and Isabella Fry fifth in 1:05.53. Olivia Miller finished third in the 500 meters in 1:19.10. Emma DiLemme was fourth in the 1,000 meters in 3:11.64 and LeighAnn Livio was fifth in 3:24.83. Isabella Santos was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.35 seconds. Elena Funk tied for third in the high jump at 1.46 meters and Brianna Hahn was fifth also at 1.46 meters.
Swimming
At Gettysburg, the University of Scranton competed at the Gettysburg Invitational. The women were third out of six teams with 535 points. The men also were third out of six teams with 542.5 points.
Aviah Dahlgren broke two women’s program records. She finished second in the 1,650 freestyle in a record 17:52.30 and, during that swim, broke the school record in the 1,000 free with a split of 10:46.02, surpassing the mark that stood since 2003.
Campbell DeLuca was fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:10.93. Amelia Griffin placed ninth in the 100 free in 55.05 seconds.
Matt Bellach led the Royals by setting the men’s program record in the 400 IM. He finished second in 4:09.80 to break the mark that stood since 2007. Bellach was also sixth in the 200 IM in 1:57.99 with teammate Jake Brunetti taking fourth in the event in 1:57.40.
Jimmy O’Malley was 10th in the 500 free in 4:49.61 and Will Tagliareni was 11th in 4:50.66. Steven Detwiler was third in the 400 IM in 4:22.90.
