ALLENTOWN, Pa. – A 27-year-old Allentown man has died after evading police, attempting to hit the officers with his vehicle, and eventually crashing his truck into a building.
Pennsylvania State Police say it was just after midnight on Sunday when they attempted a traffic stop of the man who was driving a 1999 Ford F150 truck.Â
According to a Pennsylvania State Police press release, when the man failed to stop, police pursued the vehicle which stopped in the vicinity of Lehigh Street and 29th Street in Allentown. As the officers exited the patrol vehicle and attempted to take the man into custody, the man struck the officers with his vehicle in an attempt to cause serious bodily injury, and then fled the scene.
Troopers were able to get back into their patrol vehicle and pursue the fleeing vehicle, which lost control in the area of 12th Street and Vultee Street, Allentown, where it struck a fire hydrant, utility pole and the Lehigh Valley Logistics building, located at 1801 South 12th Street.
The man was ejected from his vehicle during the crash. Police say they immediately rendered medical assistance to the man, who was then transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced deceased by the Lehigh County Coroner.
Both officers were treated at the hospital for their injuries and released.
An investigation is being conducted by the PSP Troop M Major Case Team. Assisting with this investigation: Allentown Police Department, Allentown Fire Department, Allentown EMS, Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist, Lehigh County Coroners Office and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.
