BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Pennsylvania hunter’s recent black bear harvest is the largest one recorded so far this year.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission posted Friday on Facebook, Nate Miller harvested the bear of a “lifetime” with the 717-pound black bear he killed while in Butler County over the weekend of November 22. The bear is the largest reported one to be harvested this year.

It was before daylight when Miller headed into Moraine State Park. He spent some of the morning watching the squirrels, but he eventually made his way through wet leaves to a bowl in the terrain and began glassing, the post reads.

Just seconds later, the PGC wrote that he spotted a massive bear shape about 60 to 80 yards away.

The post states, Miller steadied his “Remington 721 .30-6” and fired, but the bear disappeared. However, as he made his way down, he found blood and then the bear itself. After the bear was dragged out of the woods, it was taken to a check station in Venango County and a taxidermist came later that night to skin the bear.

The bear was measured to be seven feet and five inches from nose to tail, with an estimated live weight of 717 pounds and a dressed weight of 608 pounds, according to the PGC.

“An unforgettable day, an incredible harvest, and a memory that will last a lifetime,” the PGC posted. “Well done, Nate!”

The PGC wrote that once the bear is dry, it will be full-mounted with the skull to be scored.
