EXETER TWP., Pa. – During the Exeter Township Board of Supervisors meeting Monday night, the police department’s new chief was introduced to the public.
Board Chair Mohammad Mohammad introduced Stephen D. Powell, who started his role Monday leading the Exeter Township Police Department.
“I’d like to recognize Lt. Schaeffer and Lt. Fullerton…those guys were fantastic today, and made me feel very welcome,” Powell said. “I appreciate all their efforts and what they do for the department.”
Powell recently served as the Spring Township police chief. He has 34 years of experience and previously served with the Reading Police Department, rising to the rank of captain. He also served as the head of the West Reading Police Department.
On Aug. 13, former Chief Matthew Harley announced that he would retire after 23 years of service to the department. Since then, Lt. Steve Schaeffer has been serving as interim police chief. In September, the president of the Exeter Township Police Officers Association read a statement of support for two employees — Schaeffer and Lt. Sean Fullerton — to be considered for the position.
