A woman fleeing Mentor-on-the-Lake police went into icy Lake Erie, prompting a rescue by an officer who braved the freezing water.
MENTOR-ON-THE-LAKE, Ohio — An officer pulled a woman from Lake Erie after she fled officers and entered the water, Chief John Forsythe of the Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department said.
Forsythe told 3News that officers were called after two residents reported a woman knocking on doors and attempting to open one of them.Â
Officers located the woman sitting in a vehicle and asked her to exit. She drove away, leading police on a brief pursuit to a park at the north end of the city.Â
According to Forsythe, the woman got out of her car, ran toward the lake and entered the icy water. One officer went into the water and pulled her to safety. Another officer was injured on icy rocks while attempting a rescue.
The Mentor-on-the-Lake Fire Department responded with cold-water survival suits. The woman was transported to a hospital.Â
Forsythe said charges are pending and the department is investigating. He also said both officers are recovering.
