A fast-moving fire tore through a home in Throop early Wednesday, drawing crews from more than half a dozen departments and forcing three people from their home.

The fire broke out just before 4 a.m. at 7273 Sherman Road, near the intersection of N Division Street Road and Lewis Road. Multiple neighbors called 911, reporting that the house was fully engulfed. A Cayuga County sheriff’s deputy in the area confirmed the fire and said all residents had made it out safely.

Throop Car 1 was first on scene and immediately called for a second alarm after reporting the structure was fully involved. Auburn Engine 4 arrived shortly after and began stretching handlines to attack the fire.

Mutual aid came quickly from across Cayuga County, including departments from Port Byron, Auburn, Sennett, Owasco, Aurelius, and others. Fire coordinators, the fire investigation team, and a rehab team also responded.

The blaze was especially stubborn due to a large pile of firewood stacked on decking at the back of the house. Fire crews brought in an excavator to remove the pile, which had caught fire but was unreachable.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the three displaced residents. No injuries were reported.

The Cayuga County fire investigation team has located where the fire started but has not yet determined the cause. As of Wednesday morning, Port Byron and Throop units remained on scene, putting out flare-ups and checking for hotspots in the rubble.

The Throop Fire Department thanked the 911 center, sheriff’s office, mutual aid departments, and local residents for their fast action and support. The department also thanked its auxiliary for bringing hot drinks to the scene — and Circle K, which supplied pizzas for exhausted firefighters.

“If you have a family member over 18 who would like to join your local fire service, please contact your local fire department,” the department wrote. “We are desperately looking for help.”
