Winter weather is slowing traffic on Interstate 79 and Interstate 80 in northwest Pennsylvania.

PennDOT has temporarily reduced the speed limit to 45 miles per hour on I-79. This applies from Exit 147A near Meadville to Exit 178B at Interstate 90. Interstate 80 from the Ohio state line to Exit 42 (Route 38, Emlenton.) The change comes as snow and ice impact the region.

Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, but if you must head out, be cautious. Commercial vehicles not restricted must stay in the right lane.

PennDOT crews are working to treat the roads, but they warn that highways won’t be completely clear of snow and ice during the storm. Crews will continue working until the weather improves and roads are safe.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com.

PennDOT reminds motorists to pack an emergency kit for their vehicles. A basic kit should include non-perishable food, water, blanket, small shovel and warm clothes.

More information about how to prepare for any type of emergency, including free downloadable checklists of items to keep in your home, car, and at work, and specific information for people with access and functional needs or pets, is available on the Ready PA webpage.
