Erie police are searching for a sport-utility vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident at a westside intersection Dec. 9 that led to the death of the bicyclist.

A 66-year-old man who was on a bicycle was struck by a vehicle at West Eighth and Liberty streets in an accident that was reported at 6:53 p.m. Dec. 9, police reported Dec. 10. The bicyclist, whose name was not released, was taken to UPMC Hamot and was pronounced dead there at 7:50 p.m., according to police and the Erie County Coroner’s Office.

The vehicle involved in the accident, described by police as a red or orange SUV, fled the area. Police said they were still searching for it Dec. 10.

According to police, the SUV was traveling east on West Eighth Street when it struck the bicyclist. The vehicle will have front end and hood damage and possibly windshield damage, Deputy Chief Rick Lorah said Dec. 10.

Investigators are searching for and reviewing surveillance video from the area of the accident as part of the ongoing investigation, Lorah said
