READING, Pa. –The Berks County Commissioners adopted a resolution Thursday morning to declare an emergency to complete remediation and repairs needed at the Leesport building which houses the Berks County Youth Center and the Berks County Library Headquarters.

Damage at the building was the result of a water leak issue.

Whenever the commissioners make such a declaration, it waives all the requirements of procurement law and ratifies and confirms purchase orders issued for repairs.

Commissioner Christian Leinbach said the problem stemmed from a one-inch water line that was being worked on, and because of a blown fitting, the high pressure dispersed a large amount of water in a short time resulting in significant damage.

In other business, the commissioners voted to:

Appoint Paul McCosby to Assistant Public Defender II, effective Dec. 17 at an annual rate of $73,000.

Reappoint Amanda Hernandez, Blandon, to the County Children and Youth Services Advisory Board for a three-year term expiring on Dec. 31, 2028.

Appoint Dolores Martinez, Reading, to the County Children and Youth Services Advisory Board for a three-year term expiring on Dec. 31, 2028.
