GETTING BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY. IT WAS LAST JULY WHEN A BIKE LANE WAS INSTALLED HERE ALONG STANTON AVENUE, A JOYOUS CELEBRATION FOR AVID CYCLISTS. BUT FOR THE RESIDENTS HERE ON STANTON AVENUE, THEY BEG TO DIFFER. IT MADE A GREAT IMPACT ON US PARKING US, JUST GETTING OUT OUR CARS WITH OUR GROCERIES FOR THE DISABLED COMMUNITY IN ITSELF, LORRAINE BROWN AND HER DISABLED AUNT LIVE ALONG THE STREET AND NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH PARKING OR EVEN SIMPLE ACCESS TO THE STREET UNTIL THE CITY INSTALLED A BIKE LANE. NOW SHE WANTS TO SEE HER STREET BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS. HOPEFULLY TRY TO RETURN THE PARKING BACK TO THE ORIGINAL WAY IT WAS, OR COME UP WITH SOME OTHER SOLUTIONS THAT YOU KNOW. WE BOTH CAN BE HAPPY WITH THOSE POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS. BROUGHT UP TONIGHT AT A COMMUNITY MEETING WHERE BOTH RESIDENTS AND CYCLISTS CAME TOGETHER. WE CAME HERE TO REALLY LISTEN, TO SEE WHAT THEIR CONCERNS WERE AND TO SEE IF WE CAN BRING THOSE, YOU KNOW, THOSE, THOSE CONCERNS BACK TO THE CITY SO THAT WE CAN ALL COME TO SOME TYPE OF SOLUTION. OF COURSE, I UNDERSTAND THE, YOU KNOW, THE, THE, THE ISSUES THAT THE RESIDENTS HAVE. AND I DO TRULY BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE SOLUTIONS THAT CAN BE MADE. YOU KNOW, THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME THAT, YOU KNOW, A DESIGN HAS BEEN PUT IN AND IT’S BEEN, YOU KNOW, HAD TO CHANGE OVER TIME. THOSE ISSUES, RESIDENTS SAY THE INSTALLATION OF THE BIKE LANE HAS NOT ONLY CREATED ISSUES WITH PARKING AND ACCESS, BUT ALSO A CRITICAL FIRE HYDRANT. ANOTHER ISSUE THEY SAY THEY HAD NO TIME TO FIGHT FOR THEIR STREET. THE DAY THAT THEY WERE ACTUALLY PAVING THE STREET IS WHEN WE FOUND A FLIER. WE DON’T KNOW WHO IT CAME FROM. WHO WAS THE AUTHOR OF THE FLIER. AND SO THAT THAT DAY, THAT’S WHEN I INSTRUCTED ALL OF MY NEIGHBORS, HEY, LET’S GET A PETITION GOING. AND HERE WE ARE. NOW, AS FOR THE NEXT STEPS, LORRAINE TELLS ME THAT WOULD BE CONTACTING BOTH DOMI AND THEIR CITY COUNCILWOMAN COVERING

PITTSBURGH —

Stanton Avenue residents in Pittsburgh are frustrated with a bike lane installed last July, which they say has caused parking and access issues, prompting discussions at a community meeting Thursday.

“It made a great impact on us parking, us just getting out our cars with our groceries and for the disabled community itself,” said Lorraine Brown, who lives on the street with her disabled aunt.

Brown said she never had an issue with parking, or even simple access to the street, until the city installed a bike lane. Now, she wants to see her street back to the way it was.

“Hopefully try to return either the parking back the original way it was, or come up with some other solutions that we both can be happy with,” she said.

The community meeting brought together residents and cyclists to discuss potential solutions.

“We came here to really listen to see what their concerns were, and to see if we could bring those concerns back to the city so that we could all come to some type of solution,” said Eric Boerer, advocacy director for BikePGH.

“Of course I understand the issues that the residents have, and I do truly believe that there are solutions that can be made,” Boerer said. “This isn’t the first time that a design has been put in that’s had to change over time.”

Residents have raised concerns about parking, access, and a critical fire hydrant, and they feel they were not given adequate notice to contest the bike lane installation.

“The day that they were actually paving the street is when we found a flyer,” Brown said. “We don’t know who it came from, who was the author of the flyer. And so that day, that’s when I instructed all of my neighbors, ‘Hey, let’s get a petition going,’ and here we are,” she said.

Brown plans to contact the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure and their county councilwoman to address the issue further.
