Philadelphia police are spreading holiday cheer and ensuring hundreds of deserving families have what they need this season.
On Thursday, the Philadelphia Police Department hosted its 5th annual Shop with a Cop event at the Walmart in South Philadelphia on Columbus Boulevard.
Officials noted that this year’s event was the largest Shop with a Cop event to date, with nearly 600 families participating.
Families, who police identified as most in need, participated in a day filled with shopping, festivities, and community spirit.
Festivities included a children’s petting zoo, mummers performers, face painting, games, and so much more.
Officials said that during the event, each child also received a $150 Walmart gift card, lunch and the opportunity to take home seasonal clothing and school supplies.
“When you have the opportunity to give kids gifts during this Christmas, especially during these challenging times, when a lot of families can’t afford it. What a special day,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told NBC10. “It takes you back to those days as a child, coming down and having toys under the tree. I think about the children out here today who won’t experience that. If you could bring that experience to them. I’m just so proud of the support we received, and more importantly, the police officers who volunteered their time.”
This event was made possible with the support of the police department’s long-time partners, the Philadelphia Police Foundation and Walmart.
