Edinboro, Pennsylvania, is experiencing heavy lake effect snow, with snow totals far exceeding those in Erie.

On Thursday alone, Edinboro weather watchers recorded over 10 inches of snow, contributing to a total of 34 inches for the season, compared to Erie’s 15 inches.

“We’re considered snowbelt, Edinboro, PA. I live in Washington Township, which is just a stone throw down the hill there. But, we’re in sort of a trough here. And so, I think that a lot of the snow does get dumped on us here,” said Laurie Santos, a weather watcher from Edinboro.

Tom Atkins, meteorologist for JET24/FOX66, explained that wind direction plays a crucial role in determining where lake effect snow falls in Erie County. “When the winds bend around to the west, that’s when the city of Erie, the lakeshore and Chautauqua get it,” Atkins said. “But a lot of times, the winds are out of the northwest, and that drives it over the I-90 ridge into the area we call the snowbelt.”

Edinboro receives significant snowfall due to its location in the snowbelt, often experiencing heavy lake effect snow.

Maryjoe Campbell, another Edinboro resident, commented on the persistent snowfall, stating, “It’s pretty normal. It keeps on coming and coming and coming.”

With the heavy snowfall continuing, Edinboro residents are accustomed to dealing with significant snow accumulation each year, highlighting the area’s reputation as a snowbelt region.
