Annmarie T. (Gaven) Philbin

OBITUARY

Annmarie T. (Gaven) Philbin, a West Scranton native, passed away on Saturday evening at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton following an illness. She was 92 years old. On May 24, 2017, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, James Patrick Philbin.

Born in Scranton on February 2, 1933, and daughter of the late John and Mary (Ginley) Gaven, Ann was a graduate of West Scranton High School’s Class of 1950. First raising her family of five daughters, she would go on to work for ARA, the University of Scranton’s food service department for over twenty years prior to her well-deserved retirement.

Ann was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Parish in West Scranton, where she was also a member of the church’s quilting club. She led a life of caring for others, especially as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will never be forgotten.

Surviving are five daughters, Mary Norah Dishman and husband Kenny of Bellefonte, Annmarie DeWitt and husband Stephen of Poquoson, Virginia, Patricia Walsh and husband Atty. Joseph of Scranton, Erin Boyle of Pittsburgh, and Meghan Coury of Factoryville; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Atty. John J. Coury and Christopher D. Boyle. The last of the four Gaven siblings, she was also preceded in death by a brother, John Gaven, and sisters, Mary Helrig and Eileen Belton.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by St. Patrick’s parish pastor and family friend, Rev. Richard Fox, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel with burial to follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
