The Pittsburgh Penguins submitted one of the worst games in their history Saturday, and that includes the first 20 years of their existence, which provided almost no success or reasonable hope. The Penguins lit fire to their 5-1 lead late in the third period and lost in OT. We’ve got full coverage, analysis, and reaction. Elsewhere in the Daily, it seems Tristan Jarry knew his time was coming to a close in Pittsburgh and really wanted Edmonton as a destination. There could be sweeping changes coming to the Buffalo Sabres organization. And speculation is rampant in Vancouver that Quinn Hughes told management that he would be leaving to sign in New Jersey in two years.
Let’s dive into it today.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Ever had to delete 500 words and rewrite a story in about five minutes? Yeah, that was the postgame recap. I caught a few more typos, and for the originals, I apologize. It was a calamitous and absolute meltdown and a Penguins loss.
OK, here’s the report card. You can complain or point fingers, but here’s the information to do so. A few visual aids on the exasperating problems of the 6v5 struggles, and the real blame game. It is all in the Penguins report card.
PHN+: In better moments, I worked the locker room. Remember the consternation over the shootouts? I got a few shootout secrets and a few more exclusive items, and I named the hallway sprinter with a quick wit. Join the merry band of hockey rebels and go ad-free by subscribing: The Penguins Room.
Steelers Now: The cause of the mysterious lung “discomfort” for T.J. Watt has been revealed in the Steelers news.
And it turns out the Pirates were going to make an offer to a free agent who signed elsewhere. Darn. So close. Again, for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
It is a shame that pro sports are such a results-oriented business that invites such public scrutiny and scorn. There are many really good people around the Pirates. I don’t know as many these days, as I haven’t been around in a handful of years, but they don’t deserve this.

Sportsnet Video: The Headlines Segment on Hockey Night in Canada was loaded. More on Quinn Hughes. More on Tristan Jarry, who knew he had played his way into trade talks, and Team Canada has scheduled their roster reveal.
The Province: Speculation has essentially been confirmed, or at least that’s the belief around Vancouver after general manager Patrik Allvin seemed to indicate Hughes told them he was Audi 5000 and would sign in New Jersey in two years.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Devils coach Sheldon Keefe admitted that all of the Hughes speculation affected the Devils’ room.
The Athletic ($): Ch-ch-changes. The Buffalo Sabres appear ready to turn and face the change. GM Kevyn Adams is under review, and there could be sweeping changes very soon. Here’s the original report that is setting off all of the conversation in Buffalo.
Hockey Night in Canada: The game was 2-2 in the intermission between the Oilers and Maple Leafs, with Jarry in goal. Then it was a 5-2 Edmonton route. The Jarry postgame interview and the Maple Leafs’ anger. The perfect national telecast.
Philly Hockey Now: Should the Flyers take a gamble on the waived Lukas Reichel?
