PLAINS, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — Snow moved through the region overnight, leaving much of northeastern Pennsylvania with roughly 2 to 5 inches of accumulation, particularly in higher-elevation areas. While snowfall tapered off by early morning, slick conditions lingered on many roadways as crews continued cleanup efforts.
PennDOT reported significant plow activity on main roads by daybreak, helping improve travel on major routes. As conditions improved, the department restored normal speed limits on Interstate 81 in Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties.
Speed limit restrictions have been lifted on several highways.

PennDOT crews continue to treat roadways and will remain on duty until conditions fully improve. Officials are urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and to use caution, especially on secondary roads that may not yet be fully cleared.
Motorists are also reminded to completely clear snow and ice from their vehicles before driving. Pennsylvania law requires drivers to maintain a clear and unobstructed view of the roadway at all times.
Local police departments echoed those reminders. Jefferson Township Police warned that piling shoveled or plowed snow into roadways is prohibited and may result in enforcement actions, including citations, parking tickets, or towing.
The winter weather also disrupted community activities. Several churches announced delayed services, including Zion’s Stone Church of West Penn Township, which shifted its Sunday schedule to a two-hour delay. In Englewood, Friendship Fire Company No. 1 canceled its scheduled breakfast event due to road conditions.
Looking ahead, forecasters say cold air and occasional flurries could linger today and into Monday, mainly across higher terrain. A gradual warm-up is expected later in the week, with drier conditions anticipated from Tuesday through Thursday.
