The Las Vegas Raiders were shut out by the defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles, 31-0.
This is the second time the Raiders were shutout on the road this season, the first being against the reigning AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Coincidentally, that game ended in the same score.
After the game, Pete Carroll gave a simple explanation for what went wrong – as the team falls to 2-12 this season.
“I don’t think it’s some big psychic change that took place,” he said. “I think we just got whipped by a really loaded football team that on this day had their way.”
The game started with the Eagles offense going 3-of-3 on third down, also being assisted by a defensive pass interference call. Offensive creativity was displayed at the goal line when Jalen Hurts faked a handoff to Saquon Barkley, turning into a four-yard shovel pass to tight end Dallas Goedert for the touchdown.
Goedert almost had a second touchdown catch on the following possession, as the Eagles returned to the goal line after a 44-yard completion from Hurts to DeVonta Smith. However, Goedert dropped the ball in the end zone. On the next play, Maxx Crosby got in the backfield for his 10th sack on the season, forcing Philadelphia to opt for a 27-yard field goal from Jake Elliot.
Crosby has now notched his fourth NFL season with at least 10 sacks, with only Greg Townsend Sr. (seven between 1983 and 1991) having more 10-sack seasons in franchise history since sacks became an official statistic in 1982.
Kenny Pickett had some success throwing the ball in the first half, going 10-of-17 for 56 yards. However, moving the chains was a consistent problem. As the Eagles defense kept everything in front of them, Pickett was forced to settle for checkdowns as the offense went 3-of-8 on third downs. Protection up front was also concerning, as Pickett was sacked four times.
