In light of the recent antisemitic violence around the world, Rabbi Ted Prosnitz of Kesher Zion Synagogue will present a special program Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. in the Wyomissing Public Library.
Prosnitz will discuss the history of Hanukkah and its observance around the world, the significance of the menorah and why the festival lasts for eight days.
Hanukkah commemorates the rededication the second temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt. According to the Talmud, the temple was purified and the wicks of the menorah miraculously burned for eight days, even though there was only enough sacred oil for one day’s lighting.
The program is free and attendees are welcome to bring their lunch.
Registration is requested at wyopublib.org or by calling 610-374-2385.
