Zachary Reber, a Schuylkill County resident, has been named Pennsylvania’s Secretary of the Budget.

Gov. Josh Shapiro recently announced the appointment, which became effective on Dec. 15.

Reber had been deputy secretary for fiscal policy and program coordination in the Office of the Budget.

He succeeds Uri Monson, who stepped down to become executive director of the Pennsylvania Public School Employees Retirement System (PSERS).

In his new position, Reber will oversee the preparation and implementation of the state’s budget, which is $50.1 billion for 2025-2026.

“I am thankful to Gov. Shapiro for the opportunity to serve the Commonwealth as Secretary of the Budget,” Reber said in a press release from the governor’s office. “It’s an honor to serve in this new role where we are going to continue to be good shepherds of Pennsylvania’s resources.”

Reber resides with his spouse and two daughters in the Schuylkill Haven area.

With his two brothers, he is a fourth generation farmer.

A graduate of Alvernia University, where he majored in political science, Reber has held various roles with the state in the last decade.

He began his career with the state in the Department of Revenue in 2012.

He served as special assistant to Department of Community and Economic Development director Dennis Davin and helped oversee Gov. Tom Wolf’s economic development program.

He also served as executive director of the Keystone Economic Development and Workforce Command Center.

Joining the Office of the Budget in 2021, was a special adviser to three budget secretaries.

In his most recent position, Reber was liaison between the General Assembly and the Office of the Budget on legislation and regulatory matters.
