A new release from Pennsylvania State Police details the hours-long standoff in Adams County that ended in a man’s arrest. Troopers said they were called to a home in the area of West King and Abbottstown streets in East Berlin Borough at 3:47 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, after a man broke into a relative’s home. State police identified the man as Matthew Miller. According to the release, Miller had previously been staying at the relative’s home but was kicked out earlier that day. When Miller returned to the home and tried to enter, the relative told him he was not allowed inside, police said. Miller was not on the lease of the home, according to investigators. After many hours of the standoff, Miller came out of the home just before 9 p.m. with no weapons drawn and was asked to get on the ground, where he was taken into custody by the SERT team, according to police. Miller was taken to WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital to be checked out before being transported to Adams County Prison to await arraignment on charges. “It’s startling. I mean, I’ve lived in this town my entire life, nothing like this ever happens in a small town. I graduated here, and then I actually moved right down the street and decided to raise my own family here because this town is so safe. So, when something like this happens, obviously everybody turns up,” East Berlin resident Tisha Rosado said.
