As the holiday season approaches, FBI Pittsburgh is reminding travelers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings when flying. The agency emphasizes that passenger awareness is the first layer of security in busy airport terminals.

The FBI, along with its partners, investigates federal crimes that threaten the safety of passengers, airport staff, and flight crews. Common offenses include:

Interference with flight crew members (assault, threats, intimidation)

Physical assault (striking, throwing objects, unwanted touching)

Theft

Sexual misconduct, including sexual assault

Additionally, the FBI investigates violence at airports, interference with security screening personnel, and bomb threats related to air travel.

“Your awareness is the first layer of security when traveling. Airport terminals are busy places during the holidays. If traveling in a group, encourage everyone to stay alert, secure personal belongings, and speak up if something doesn’t look right,” said FBI Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek.

Travelers are reminded that bringing undisclosed firearms to airport checkpoints can lead to severe consequences, including significant fines and arrest. Such incidents often shut down security checkpoints, causing delays for all passengers. The FBI urges travelers to plan ahead, pack properly, and confirm the location of firearms and ammunition before leaving home.

If you witness or experience a crime while traveling, report it immediately to your flight crew, the nearest law enforcement officer, or the FBI. Tips can be submitted by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or online at tips.fbi.gov.
