The Bigelow Boulevard Betterment Project consists of a roadway resurfacing and structure rehabilitation from the Route 579 interchange to the Bloomfield exit in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County. Bigelow Boulevard is a major corridor in the City of Pittsburgh that connects downtown with the surrounding areas to the north and east. Currently, over 21,000 vehicles utilize Bigelow Boulevard each day. The project includes the milling and overlay of existing pavement, removal of the existing barrier and replacement with concrete barriers, drainage upgrades, barrier and guiderail upgrades, improvements to pedestrian facilities including ADA updates and railings, signing and pavement markings, curb repairs, lighting upgrades and repairs to retaining walls and sign structures. Coordination with the City of Pittsburgh provided insight to allow for improvements which will allow for drivers to easily navigate the roadway and provide pedestrians and roadway users better protection from errant vehicles. The project’s structure work includes spall, backwall, overhead substructure, downspout and barrier repairs, sealing of the joints, gutterlines, substructures, decks, and some structures will have full paint. The project is scheduled to start construction in the Spring of 2027, likely concluding near the end of the same year.

Multiple short-term detours are planned during closures of Bigelow Boulevard for structure work. Preliminary planned detour routes utilize Liberty Avenue (approximately 3 miles) and Center Avenue (approximately 2.3 miles).
