Derrick Brunson’s story about being a New York City homicide detective was as phony as a diamond ring he gave to a woman in Carbon County, state police said.

Police said Brunson, 53, of Middletown, Dauphin County, came to their attention on Oct. 27 after a woman from Lehigh Twp. said she sent him $2,711 that he said he needed for emergencies after telling her that he was a detective and proposing to her.

They charged Brunson, 53, of Middletown, Dauphin County, with theft by deception and impersonating a police officer.
