A 34-year-old Scranton man faces charges after police said he severely injured another male and then attempted to clean up the crime scene.
On Monday, Scranton police were contacted by officials from Geisinger Community Medical Center about an incident that occurred around 12:30 p.m. at 925 S. Webster Ave. in which medical personnel were called to the residence for the report of an unresponsive male on the kitchen floor, according to a criminal complaint.
Once on scene, emergency personnel found the male — later identified as Paul Domines — unresponsive, police said.
Medical staff from the hospital informed police that the injuries suffered by Domines were not consistent with a fall victim and that they believe he was assaulted, detectives said.
When officers responded to the residence, they encountered Russell Hayes, who told police Domines does not live there, according to the criminal complaint.
Officers detected an odor of cleaning products inside the home and noted Hayes — who is accused of assaulting Domines — was coughing from the strong smell, detectives said.
Detectives also spotted blood on the walls, table and lower parts of the refrigerator, police said.
Police observed that Hayes had bruises and cuts on his right knuckles, and bruises on his left knuckles. His hands also started to shake as he tried to use his phone after police told him about Domines’ condition, detectives said.
Hayes told detectives he got into a verbal argument with Domines in the kitchen and that it was just the two of them in the home, police said.
Then, Hayes said he heard a loud noise and found Domines on the floor by the refrigerator and that Domines kept saying, “you win, you win,” according to the criminal complaint.
The landlord told police Hayes had called him and was extremely hyper, like his adrenaline was pumping, detectives said. Additionally, Hayes told the landlord Domines must have been cooking fish and “took a bad spill,” according to the criminal complaint.
The landlord also noticed streaks of blood running down the wall and some blood on the floor at least 8 to 10 feet away from the stove area where Domines allegedly fell, police said.
An emergency medical technician informed police that Hayes told her that Domines accused him of stealing items, which led to the argument, detectives said.
One EMT told detectives that Domines had a swollen right eye, a bruised left eye, blood in his mouth and nose, and apparent abdominal injuries, police said.
Another EMT told detectives Domines was wearing two thick chains and had marks around his neck as if someone had been choking him or pulling on the chains, according to the criminal complaint.
Domines — who underwent emergency surgery — was paralyzed and sedated with a breathing tube, detectives said.
Domines suffered many injuries, including traumatic hemorrhagic shock, multiple rib fractures, a fractured L2 vertebra, a brain bleed, a fractured sternum, a fractured nasal bone, a fractured left orbital bone and a fractured jaw in two places, police said.
Detectives believe Domines was the victim of a violent physical attack that occurred after arguing with Hayes, and they charged Hayes with aggravated assault, simple assault and tampering with physical evidence.
As of Thursday, Hayes remained in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $500,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 30 at 10 a.m.
