At halftime of a special Saturday evening football game, the Washington Commanders lead the Philadelphia Eagles 10-7.
The game got off to a rollicking start with the Eagles fumbling the opening kickoff thanks to a fantastic play by Washington defensive back Mike Sainristil. The Commanders then drove down to the goal line and had a pair of chances to get into the end zone from 2 yards out, but threw incomplete both times and settled for a field goal.Â
The Eagles took a lead late in the first quarter with a Jalen Hurts touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith. Smith and A.J. Brown were the only players targeted by Hurts throughout the first half, and they each made big plays on the drive that led to Smith’s score.Â
Philly had a chance to add to its lead midway through the second quarter, but stalled its drive just outside the red zone and then saw Jake Elliott pull his kick wide to the left, resulting in a missed opportunity.Â
Washington took advantage of the miss by driving for a touchdown on its ensuing possession. Marcus Mariota hit Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel for chunk gains along the way, then Jacory Croskey-Merritt punched the ball into the end zone from a yard out to give the Commanders a lead.Â
Philadelphia then got a chance for a two-minute drive, on which the Eagles drove near scoring position before Hurts was strip-sacked. He recovered his own fumble to preserve the opportunity for his team to score. An offside penalty on Elliott’s second missed field goal of the half momentarily gave Philly new life, but Elliott then hooked a third opportunity wide left to keep Washington in the lead.
Will the Eagles make it back-to-back wins and wrap up the NFC East crown, or will the Commanders pull off a surprising upset? We’ll find out soon enough. But before we break down some key storylines, here’s a look at how you can watch the game.Â
