ERIE — Erie football lost its first league game since 2020, falling to Mullen 18-6 on Friday night.

Mason Bonner, the Mustangs’ 6-foot-7 Michigan tight end commit, had the big-time catches one could’ve predicted from 247Sports and On3’s No. 6 best player out of Colorado’s 2026 class. Yet his biggest play of the night may have been wrangling Oregon State pledge Braylon Toliver behind the line on fourth-and-goal from inside the 1-yard line in the game’s first possession.

The Tigers (5-3, 2-1 5A Front Range-South League) went on to sputter offensively until the fourth quarter, when an incompletion call in the endzone may have gotten in the way of an interesting finish.

After a muffed punt by Mullen with 10:44 remaining, senior Parker Pruett’s diving catch attempt was ruled to hit the ground and the Tigers ended up failing on fourth down, giving the ball back to the Mustangs.

Gabe Sema, Erie’s star TE who is committed to Northern Arizona, caught a TD on the Tigers’ next drive, helping them avoid their first shutout in 10 years. Mullen  (4-4, 3-0) then ran out the clock.

Once a powerhouse under the voice of the Denver Broncos, Dave Logan, who is now at Cherry Creek, the Mustangs’ first win in four tries against Erie may end up going down as the program’s biggest in years.

After the Colorado Preps 5A No. 9 Tigers were denied the endzone in the opening minutes, the big runs from Toliver, and everything that was working so well inside that first possession, evaporated for much of the next three quarters.

Mullen, meanwhile, got the big plays when it needed. Nick Marcoux caught two touchdowns from quarterback Cole Parson, and Bonner caught another in-between and just ahead of halftime. The senior QB’s third TD pass dropped over Marcoux’s shoulder in the back of the endzone with 5:19 left in the third quarter.
