A teenage girl has been identified after she was struck and killed by a vehicle that slid off the roadway on Saturday, Dec. 20, authorities announced.
Emergency crews were called around 2:50 p.m. to the intersection of Brownsville Road and Woodford Avenue, where a vehicle traveling along Brownsville Road began to slide, struck a utility pole, and continued moving before hitting 17-year-old Ishara Kami, Pittsburgh Public Safety said.
Medics began CPR at the scene before transporting Kami to a hospital in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead, officials confirmed.
The driver remained at the scene following the crash. It was not immediately clear whether charges will be filed. The investigation remains ongoing.
Pittsburgh Public Schools confirmed Kami was a senior at Carrick High School and released a statement acknowledging her death.
“The District is deeply saddened to report the passing of Pittsburgh Carrick student Ishara Kami,” officials said, adding that counseling and support services are being coordinated for students and staff.
According to the district, Kami was enrolled in the Health Tech program and was remembered by staff for her kind spirit, helpful nature, and positive presence in the classroom.
School officials extended condolences to Kami’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and the Carrick school community.
