The Lehigh Valley could see a wintry mix of snow, ice and rain as a clipper system moves through the region early Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, N.J., said the precipitation would begin after midnight Tuesday and end by the afternoon. Most of the Lehigh Valley will see a coating to an inch of snow, while the Poconos could see 2 to 3 inches of snow.

However, snow may change to freezing rain late Tuesday morning, and forecasters warn that could mean a light glaze of ice on surfaces in the Lehigh Valley, Poconos and far northwest New Jersey.

While forecasters have not yet issued weather advisories, they said a winter weather advisory could be warranted for Carbon and Monroe counties “if confidence increases enough for snowfall amounts nearing 3 inches and/or a light glaze of ice to occur in these areas.”

“Snow falling Tuesday morning could certainly cause travel issues and slippery/icy roads despite the light snowfall amounts,” forecasters said. “In any case, this is still not expected to be a significant snow event for our area.”

Precipitation should end by noon Tuesday, and then temperatures will start warming up “by a few degrees.”

Temperatures the rest of the week will be mild and seasonable, although another weak system could bring light precipitation on Christmas Day, forecasters said. “Unsettled” weather will continue into the weekend.
