ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — Millions of Americans are gearing up for the holidays with baking cookies, wrapping presents and filling up their gas tanks.

AAA projects over 122 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1. About 109 million of those people are expected to drive by car.

The national average price for a gallon of gas is at its lowest point since 2020: $2.85. The average in Pennsylvania, though, is about $3.21.

“I think gas prices are ridiculous. Particularly here in the state of Pennsylvania,” Jessica Hogan said.

Matt Hiton noted, “It’s a financial burden a little bit. You know what I mean? Like it has to be budgeted, how much gas you get through a week. I’m a budget kind of a person so you know, I budget everything that comes through. At the end of the day it’s a cost.”

Other people do not know how to feel about the price of gas, citing the need to buy it regardless of cost, “I don’t have too many feelings. I have to buy gas so, it’s not like if it goes to $4 I’m not going to buy it,” Josh Sieger said.

In terms of how much it costs to fill up a tank, it depends on the vehicle. “Whenever I go to fill up my tank it’s usually like 50 bucks so it’s not too bad… it’s gone up but not as much as it could,” Grant Corso said.

Other people do not notice the price until asked, “I don’t really think too much of it. But now that I look back, it definitely feels like we are spending a little more than I’m used to, but I feel like the prices have gone down a little bit,” Emily Hershey told WTAJ.
