ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Theft and related charges have been dropped against former Allentown police officer Jason Krasley, who still faces multiple sex crime charges stemming from his time with the department.
Krasley, 48, of Upper Milford Township, had been charged in January with theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and tampering with evidence. The charges accused him of stealing $5,000 seized during a police raid several years ago.
In a hearing Friday before Lehigh County Judge Thomas M. Caffrey, prosecutors withdrew those charges, citing prosecutorial discretion.
“District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan announces theft and related charges have been withdrawn against a former Allentown Police Vice Officer,” the DA’s office said in a written statement. “All charges were withdrawn due to prosecutorial discretion. This office will not comment further about the withdrawal of charges.”
Krasley’s attorney, James Burke, had previously filed a motion to dismiss the charges, arguing that the case lacked evidence. He said no one actually saw Krasley take or handle the missing money, which had been kept in an unsealed bag accessible to multiple people.
Burke also noted that the charges were filed six years after the alleged theft.
“In 34 years of criminal defense practice, I have never seen such slipshod recording and preservation of recovered money,” Burke wrote in his motion.
While the theft case has been dropped, Krasley still faces separate charges of rape, involuntary servitude and indecent assault, along with co-defendant and fellow former officer Evan Weaver, 45. The two are accused of sexually assaulting women while serving as Allentown police officers.
Weaver remains on administrative leave, and Krasley retired from the department in 2021. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting the sexual assault and prostitution-related cases, while the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office handled the now-withdrawn theft case.
