With less than a day until Christmas, folks are scrambling at grocery stores to buy everything they need for a happy holiday.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Christmas is a day for family, gifts, and celebration, but Christmas Eve is a different story for some.

“I forgot to get these things, so I’m rushing in, and there’s not a lot of traffic, and I’m having the time of my life in Gerrity’s,” said Patty Lawler from Dunmore.

That’s why folks are rushing into Gerrity’s along North Keyser Avenue in Scranton to buy all the things they need for the annual Christmas feast.

“It’s been a mad rush, but I can’t do without these things because I’m having people for Christmas Eve dinner, so I have to do the whole shebang, you know?” said Lawler.

It’s a mad rush that the folks manning the store have been preparing for.

“Every parking spot is full, and the lines are full, but only two or three people in each register line, the girls are really keeping up with it and the guys, they were carrying packages out for them, so it’s going really smoothly, really smoothly,” said John Nicolosi, the assistant manager at the Keyser Avenue Gerrity’s.

But not everyone in the store is here for last-minute shopping; some are here buying groceries on Christmas Eve on purpose.

“You got to make sure it’s all fresh, you know all the produce that’s in there, got to throw an orange in the stocking, right?” said K.C. Wetzel of Lackawanna County.

Although Christmas Eve can be a mad rush for some, they say it’s all worth it in the end.

“Christmas is a beautiful time of the year, all the mess will be behind us, everything will be bought, everything will be done, and we look forward to the new year,” said Lawler.
