Erie football has won every league game since coach Jeff Giger took over the program 4 ½ years ago.

And with the help of top-level collegiate recruits in running back Braylon Toliver and tight end Gabe Sema, the Colorado Preps 5A No. 9 Tigers (5-2, 2-0), in their second season inside the Front Range South League, are looking for it to stay that way when they host Mullen on Friday.

Football: Toliver & Company making most of new roles for Erie

Toliver, who committed to Oregon State in May, has been box-office-blockbuster good in his senior football season. After sitting out of the team’s 35-23 win at Rangeview, he returned last week and totaled 192 yards of offense and three scores in a 61-34 win over Vista PEAK Prep. He’s rushed for 670 yards and has nine touchdowns, including one via pick-six.

The win over Vista PEAK Prep (Erie’s fourth straight) was the second time this season it has surpassed 60 points (in its season opener, it beat Brighton 67-17). Against the Bison, junior quarterback Jack Arnold threw for a career-best five scores. One of them was to Sema, the Northern Arizona tight end commit, who already has three TD receptions this month.

After a great visit to Flagstaff and some tough conversations I’ve officially decided to commit to @NAU_Football. A big thank you to @FettNick, @TimRoschmann, the entire staff of NAU, and of course my family and all of those that have supported me on this journey that’s just… pic.twitter.com/HG5agT9Mgp

The Tigers now prepare for a team still hungry for its first marquee win of the season. While the Tigers took down a talented Fort Collins (5-2) and 4A defending champ Broomfield (6-1) in consecutive weeks to end September, the Mustangs (3-4, 2-0) don’t have much to show from a daunting nonconference schedule. Good or bad.

Behind Lincoln Hageman, Erie football stuns Broomfield in thriller

Mullen’s losses this fall are to Colorado Preps 5A No. 3 Ralston Valley, No. 7 Valor Christian, preseason top-10 Regis Jesuit and California’s Crean Lutheran, which is now 7-0. Each of the Mustangs’ wins, meanwhile, are to teams currently with an identical record to them at 3-4.

Mullen’s top prospect is 6-foot-7 tight end Mason Bonner, who is committed to the University of Michigan. This season, he has 26 catches for 462 yards, a trio of scores and leads the team with 3 ½ sacks.

Last week, Mullen senior quarterback Cole Parsons threw for a career-most 270 yards and two scores (one to Bonner) as the Mustangs held on to beat Legacy, 28-20.

The Tigers are currently ranked ninth in the state by MaxPreps. Mullen is 20th. Erie has beaten Mullen the past three seasons, including a year ago when Toliver had a big night in a 48-13 victory.

Friday’s kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
