CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — A multi-vehicle crash and subsequent weather-related hazards have forced changes to traffic patterns on Interstate 80 eastbound, with officials now estimating the roadway will remain closed until at least 6:30 p.m.

The crash, which occurred between mile markers 69 and 70 in Clarion Township, was reported at approximately 12:52 p.m. Monday. Tpr. Allison Swanchak of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) in Clarion is leading the investigation into the pileup.

Interstate 80 is closed between exit 60 (Route 66 North – Shippenville) and exit 78 (Brookville), according to PennDOT’s Tina Gibbs.

According to PSP, the crash involved multiple vehicles. While earlier reports indicated injuries, police stated Monday afternoon that the extent of injuries remains unknown.

The investigation is ongoing with assistance from multiple agencies, fire departments, and towing services.

PennDOT has announced a critical change to the detour route due to a downed tree on Route 66, approximately 1.5 miles north of New Bethlehem. The original detour is no longer viable.

Motorists traveling eastbound must now exit at Exit 60. Drivers should take Route 66 North to Route 322 East and merge back onto I-80 at Exit 70 in Strattanville.

State police warned drivers to slow down due to snow accumulation on the roadway and to be alert for sudden snow squalls in high-traffic areas.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact PSP-Clarion at 814-227-1710.
