A woman is facing multiple charges for allegedly beating a puppy and zipping it inside a suitcase in Pittsburgh’s East Allegheny neighborhood. According to a criminal complaint, police were called to the 400 block of Avery Street on Christmas Day following reports of a woman actively beating a puppy. Officials were called to the scene just before midnight. A man standing along the street, who did not make the initial 911 call to report the incident, told police that he could hear a woman yelling at her dog. He said the woman then “zipped it up” into her suitcase and began to walk down the street. The woman was later identified as 56-year-old Jayme White. Officers said White was found walking along the street and admitted to having the puppy zipped inside her suitcase. Police said the puppy did not appear to have been injured, and White was told she could not enclose the puppy inside. She was released until officials received another call, which stated White had smacked the puppy multiple times and zipped it back into the suitcase. Officers made contact with White again near the intersection of Pressley Street and Cedar Avenue, the complaint stated. White later removed the dog from the suitcase and began to yell at officers. Officials then took her into custody, where they recovered open alcohol and five boxes of prescribed medication inside her purse. The puppy was taken to the Pittsburgh Police Zone 1 station, where a small open sore was found on one of its paws. The puppy also appeared to have shown signs of dehydration. White is facing multiple charges, including animal cruelty and public drunkenness. Download the WTAE app to stay connected with breaking news.
