Joseph Levine, 92, who most recently resided in the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, died Thursday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit in Dunmore.  His wife of 65 years, the former Delores “Dolly” Romanyshyn, died in 2022.

Born in Scranton on April 9, 1933 to the late Max and Celia Israelet Levine, he was a graduate of Ben Franklin High School and the University of Scranton where he studied business. He was a retired sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, having served during the Korean War, and was also a JCI Senator, and a Past President of the Lions Club of Carbondale.  In 1956, he joined the family business, Max Levine & Sons, and became a co-owner in 1960 with his brother Isadore, and continued as Carbondale Upholstering.  His daughter, Nancy, continues to run the business today.

He enjoyed bowling, Penn State Football, the Yankees, going for rides, sitting on his porch, chocolate ice cream, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, of whom he was so proud.  He and Dolly were their grandchildren’s biggest supporters.  They never missed an activity or sporting event for them, no matter how far they needed to travel.  His passing leaves a giant void in his family’s hearts.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Geisinger-CMC, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kindness and compassion.

Surviving are his three children, Nancy Washeleski and husband Joseph (preceded in death) of Carbondale, Carol Torch and husband Andy of Carbondale, and Steven Levine of Allentown, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Washeleski and wife Bethany, Andrew Torch and wife Sarah, Michael Torch, and Alyssa Mosolino and husband Phil; five great-grandchildren, Cameron and Kennedy Torch, Rory, Maggie, and Lainey Mosolino; nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers Isadore and Simon Levine; and sisters Zelda Katz, Mildred Rosenbloom, Shirley Meyers, Dorothy Salvatore,

The funeral will be Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore with services by Rabbi Daniel Bubnis.

The family will be receiving friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service.   Interment will follow in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery, 105 Shoemaker Rd., Dalton.

Shiva will be observed at the home of his daughter, Nancy, Sunday from 4-7 p.m.
