SCRANTON — Max McGrath led five players in double figures with 20 points and Scranton Prep’s defense contained Dunmore’s high-powered offense to notch a 77-63 victory Monday night in the championship game of the 74th Lynett Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament at the Lackawanna College Student Union.
Packy Doherty added 15 points for the Cavaliers (5-2) and was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Brody Martin followed with 14 points, Jimmy Doherty contributed 12 points and Chicky Skoff finished with 11.
Leading, 49-44, after three quarters, Jimmy Doherty hit three consecutive 3-pointers to begin the fourth, extending the advantage to 58-45 and sending Scranton Prep on its way to its 24th Lynett title and first since 2022.
Jimmy Clark paved the way for Dunmore with 18 points. Carter Sload added 16, Brayden Canavan had 15 and Nate Aviles 12.
After shooting 66.7 percent with 17 3-pointers and scoring 96 points in their semifinal win over Holy Cross, the Bucks (8-1) were limited to 35.3 percent shooting from the field (18 for 51) by Scranton Prep’s defense, including 8 for 31 from 3-point range.
Martin and Clark were named to the all-tournament team along with Tony Battaglia from Scranton and C.J. Thompson of Holy Cross.
Behind Battaglia’s 47 points, Scranton defeated Holy Cross in the consolation game, 73-51.
